Updated: April 2017
Hi Guys! Please enjoy this new updated Best Shoujo Manga Recommendations <3

I present to you the list of my favorite Shoujo Mangas
image
I love to read mangas, especially the shoujo ones. It might not only be me, but I could say that I’m a very picky reader. I know its not right, but I judge the manga by its art, and its characters’ appearance. If the story is catchy, I’ll read it right away, but if not, onto the next one.

1. Ao Haru Ride
image
STATUS: Completed, 49 Chapters
GENRE: Comedy, Drama, Romance, School Life, Shoujo, Slice Of Life

PLOT: Yoshioka Futaba has a few reasons why she wants to “reset” her image and life as a new high-school student. Because she’s cute, she was ostracized by her female friends in junior high, and because of a misunderstanding, she couldn’t get her feeling across to the one boy she has always liked, Tanaka-kun. Now in high school, she is determined to be as unladylike as possible so that her friends won’t be jealous of her. While living her life this way contentedly, she meets Tanaka-kun again, but he now goes under the name of Mabuchi Kou. He tells her that he felt the same way as she did when they were younger, but now things can never be the same again. Will Futaba be able to continue her love that never even started from three years ago?

REVIEW: The most lovable manga, I think. This manga has been popular these days, no wonder why it was adapted into an anime which previously ended with 12 episodes. Gosh! We need more! But don’t worry, there's actually a live-action released last December 2014 which covered most of the manga. The manga is completed with 49 chapters. Many would like this, well, I LOVED it, because not only the storyline is good, but also the art is outstanding. Io Sakisaka is my favorite mangaka. Her other phenomenal manga is Strobe Edge, which is equally excellent as Ao haru ride.

2. Orange By Takano Ichigo
image
STATUS: Completed, 22 Chapters
GENRE: Drama, Mystery, Romance, School Life, Shoujo, Slice Of Life, Tragedy
PLOT: In the Spring she was 16, Takamiya Naho receives a strange, but detailed letter from herself, ten years in the future. At first she thinks the letter is a prank, but then the things written in the letter actually happen, including the new transfer student that sits next to her in class, Naruse Kakeru. The letter reads just like her diary entries, down to the same characters. It is not till two weeks later, when Kakeru shows back up at school, that Naho finishes the letter. In the letter, her 27-year-old self tells her 16-year-old self that her biggest regret is that Kakeru is no longer with them in the future, and asks her to watch him closely. This manga takes a hiatus.

REVIEW: This definitely made me cry. EVERYTIME. Despite its hiatus, this manga is one of the best especially when it comes to its plot which makes it very unique and interesting. Art is as pleasing as well. Every chapter is as exciting as the first. You’ll never get tired of it. Even though it takes forever for it to update, I’ll be anticipating for it always. But now I think its back on its monthly release because they updated last month and then today, I hope it continues.

*UPDATE*: It is completed, I think last year, just before the Live Action and anime adaptation was aired with 22 chapters. Both of them covered the whole manga series which is good but somehow sad cause its short for me, nevertheless, its still my favourite.

3. Strobe Edge
STATUS: Completed, 36 Chapters
GENRE: Comedy, Drama, Romance, School Life, Shoujo, Slice Of Life
PLOT: Having no experience in romance, the vibrant Ninako curiously explores the meaning of what "love" really is, and is surprised to feel a colorful range of emotions as she grows closer to the school heartthrob, the quiet yet gentle Ren, who also happens to be involved in a longtime relationship. With every intention of keeping her head held high, Ninako prepares to face the mental pain of this one-sided love that she had allowed to take root, facing a series of trials that would either contribute to her growth as a headstrong woman, or break her as it did with other girls. However, is this really a one-sided love? Or had something been silently sown in the most hidden area of Ren's heart?
REVIEW: This one’s adorable. Strobe Edge is another work of Io Sakisaka, which for me, is the best mangaka when it comes to shoujo. It ended with 36 chapters, which is way too short, I want more!! But don’t worry guys, it may have ended in the manga, fortunately it was also been adapted into a live action! Yay!

4. Last Game
STATUS: Completed, 56 Chapters
GENRE: Comedy, Drama, Romance, School Life, Shoujo
PLOT: He's rich, he's smart, girls gather around him all the time, and he has always gotten first place on his exams... well, until Kujou transferred in his primary school class. She was quiet, plain, and poor, yet not once has she failed at beating Yanagi, both in academics and sports! Yanagi has made it his life goal to defeat this girl Kujou, and ten years later, as they enter high school, he just might finally win! This is the story of their last game.

REVIEW: This is a cute and light manga. If you’re looking for a feel-good read, this one’s perfect. The characters, the plot, both are gradually sailing as you read every chapters. It kinda reminds me of Kimi ni Todoke and Special A combined.

5. Tonari no Kaibutsu-kun
STATUS: Completed
GENRE: Comedy, Romance, School Life, Shoujo, Slice Of Life
PLOT: Also known as “The Monster Next to Me”. Ever since he was involved in a fight on the first day of school, Yoshida-san, who sits in the seat next to me, hasn't come to school even once. I only cared about my grades and my future, but, by chance, he befriends me so that I can bring him his homework. I became kinder to him when I learned of his innocence, but will he now confess to me as well...?!
REVIEW: Very funny and romantic as well. Tonari no Kaibutsu-kun is a popular anime, but as always, its manga version is lovelier because the story is prolonged compared to what we watched on screen. It ended with 52 chapters.

6. Bokura Ga Ita
STATUS: Completed
GENRE: Comedy, Drama, Romance, School Life, Shoujo, Slice Of Life, Tragedy
PLOT: The start of high school life. To the girls, that also meant the start of their love lives. For brand new first year student, Takahashi Nanami (Nana for short), it was no different... She happens to end up in the same class as the incredibly popular Yano Motoharu, who rumors say that two thirds of all the girls are guaranteed to fall in love with. But will that hold true for Nana, who says that if she had to choose between like or dislike, she'd say she dislikes him!?
REVIEW: This is definitely one of my favorites. Bokura Ga Ita is the first shoujo manga I’ve read back in 2010. I’ve first watched its anime, and got fascinated by the story which leaves me hungry for more. I continued it on manga and I think because of that, my manga addiction started. Then I discovered that it has a live-action, not only one, but a two-part movie, and that completed half of my life. Hahaha. Definitely worth-reading!

7. Kimi ni Todoke
STATUS: Ongoing
GENRE: Comedy, Drama, Romance, School Life, Shoujo, Slice Of Life
PLOT: Sawako Kuronuma is the perfect heroine... for a horror movie. With her jet-black hair, sinister smile and silent demeanor, she's often mistaken for the haunting movie character Sadako. But behind her scary facade is a very misunderstood teenager. Too shy to fit in, all she wants to do is make some friends. But when a popular boy in class befriends her, she's sure to make more than just that--she's about to make some enemies too! In 2008 it won the Best Shoujo Manga award in the 32nd Annual Kodansha Manga Award. The series was also nominated for the first Manga Taisho awards in 2008.

REVIEW: This is like the “Queen” of all Shoujo mangas. Kimi ni Todoke is one of the most popular shoujo manga, don’t you think? Because of that, it has been made into a 2-season anime and a live action. As for the manga, it is still ongoing with 100+ chapters. It is a light and feel-good manga that you shouldn’t miss.

8. Heroine Shikkaku

STATUS: Completed
GENRE: Comedy, Romance, School Life, Shoujo
PLOT: This could be any girl. Imagine being a heroine of a love story. Hatori also believed that one day she would get married to her childhood friend, Rita. But that's not how the world works! This is a hilarious comedy that honestly paints a painful unrequited love story of this young girl!

REVIEW: Very funny, indeed. Heroine Shikkaku is one of those mangas where you’ll be definitely root for the second lead guy, haha is it just me? The manga recently ended with 36 chapters, and guess who she ended up with? Nah, just see for yourself :P
This was recently been adapted into a live-action, and boy oh boy second lead syndrome is too damn high on this one.

9. Hirunaka no Ryuusei
STATUS: Completed, 78 Chapters
GENRE: Comedy, Romance, School Life, Shoujo
PLOT: 15-year-old country girl Suzume Yosano has to move to Tokyo to live with her uncle due to her father's transfer. She bumps into a mysterious man who ends up taking her to her uncle's place after she gets lost. Turns out, Suzume will be seeing him a lot more often once she starts school because...he's actually her homeroom teacher!

REVIEW: Its coming to an end! Go Mamura! Haha, Its been firing up a huge war against team Mamura and team Shishio lately. Well as for me who always have SGS (Second Guy Syndrome) I’ll go for Mamura, even if Suzume choose Sensei, I’ll keep Mamura for myself haha.

*UPDATE*: The end caused an uproar in the shoujo community hahaha. But as for me, I'm so happy it turned out that way ;)
It will also be adapted into a live-action!!

10. Hanagimi to Koisuru Watashi
STATUS: Ongoing
GENRE: Comedy, Romance, School Life, Shoujo
PLOT: Nanase Sakashita is good at playing the role of Model Student but that doesnt stop her from taking an interest in Hana-kun, the schools delinquent. Hana-kun accidently drops a small box while sneaking around on the school grounds. When Nanase tries to return the box, Hana-kun tells her to keep it for its already to late to give it to the person he likes, who is this person?

REVIEW: It’s a nice love story. One of the things I like about  Hanagimi to Koisuru Watashi is that it doesn’t prolong the getting-together part. Unlike other mangas that drags the story till the end to find out who chose who. It shows how high school relationships be like, facing troubles, breaking up, getting back together.

11. L-DK
STATUS: Ongoing
GENRE: Comedy, Romance, School Life, Shoujo
PLOT: L-DK shows us a love stroy between Shuusei Kugayama and Aoi Nishimori. Shuusei Kugayama is the "prince" of his high school, but he always turns down confessions--including one from Aoi Nishimori's best friend. Although she initially hates him..

REVIEW: Sweet! It is a shoujo manga many teen girls would love. Cool guy falls for an ordinary girl. Watch how this two fall inlove and how they face a load of encounters. Btw, L-DK was also turned into a live-action, have you seen it?

12. Horimiya
STATUS: Ongoing
GENRE: Comedy, Romance, School Life, Shoujo, Slice Of Life
PLOT: Hori may seem like a normal teenage girl, but she's a completely different person after school. In her workaholic parents' absence, Hori has been like a parent for her little brother since she was young herself. Between taking care of her brother, feeding them both, and housework, she doesn't have much time for a usual teenage social life. One day, she meets someone else who does not present his true self at school: a quiet, glasses-wearing boy called Miyamura. She'd assumed he was bookish, and possibly an otaku, but Hori couldn't have been more wrong. Outside of school, Miyamura is a friendly guy with many piercings, and he's not very good at academics. Now the two of them have someone with whom they can share both halves of their lives!
REVIEW: Cute and Interesting. Horimiya is not just about a love story, it also has comedic side and slice of life. I love how the characters grow as the chapters go by.

13. Hibi Chouchou
STATUS: Completed, 75 Chapters
GENRE: Comedy, Romance, School Life, Shoujo, Slice Of Life
PLOT: Upon entering high school, the very quiet but extremely cute Suiren becomes the immediate center of attention among the boys…but one particular boy does not look her way.The story of a quiet girl and a quiet boy. A short, refreshing love story.
REVIEW: The most charming love story. Suiren is indeed a takane-no-hana! Hibi Chouchou is a light and very cute manga to read. I can’t get enough of it, kyaaa!

14. 360 Degrees Material
STATUS: Ongoing

Could she be the one whom Shou truly loves? And what does that mean for Tsubasa?

REVIEW: This one is also good. One of the things I love in this manga, is that the lead girl, is not that weak that cries all the time and follows the boy he like. No, she has this strong will and character that made me like her. Loved the story too, btw.

NOTE: For the mangas that doesn't have reviews, I apologize, its been 2 years since I've last read most of them and can't remember how I felt about reading those. I'm just referring to the list I had on Pocket Manga for the ones I've bookmarked and read already. But rest assured, all of the mangas listed here are really good. ;)

I may re-read some of the ones that I forgot and update this blog for my thoughts and review. And please, share me some of the new shoujo mangas and manwhuas that aren't here, preferably those who came out from 2014 up to now. Thanks for the support!

  77. Good list. I also personally think Bokura ga ita is one of the best manga ever been. I am shoujo "hard core", been reading it since I was a little, and it means 80s/90s shoujo manga. I found it really difficult to find good shoujo manga these days, as most of the character very stereotype, the story not deep and close to shallow, and some is just too vulgar for teenager. Bokura ga ita is probably one of the modern manga I found very similar to 90s manga. the other manga I also enjoyed much reading it from your list, tonari no koibutsu kun. This manga is hilarious, but has something deep about the characters. I hope they will make it to live action soon. pretty surprise you did not include Nodame Cantabile. some Tomo Matsumoto works also worth to read if you are into weird/strange character (e.g. beauty is the beast).

I don't know if you area interesting with 90s manga, but if you would like a try, here are the list you should check sometime.

    - all mangas created by kyoko hikawa
every 80/90s girl who loves manga must be very familiar to this mangaka. these are beautiful mangas ever made. her works always really simple, yet deep and bring the best of human character. I highly recommended her books, you can start with Girls, Chizumi/Fujiome series, Shiroi Mado no Mukougawa. the art drawing also very soothing.

    -Hana yori dango.
I don't care how many people says that Hana Yori Dango live action is the best jdrama ever been, cause it is not. If you read the manga then you'll know how injustice the movie has been to original story (esp. when they make the heroine accept the marriage proposal after graduation. which is very opposite to manga and its completely destroyed the message from the creator). I will say that most of manga character has been killed by the movie. anyway, the hana yori dango manga may started with cheesy story. but this book start in 1992 and ends up in 2002. you will see how the story and character have grown as the real mangaka grew. and maybe this is the pioneer for other shoujo stereotype these days, love story of poor girl and rich boy with attitude.

    -I Love Her.
I normally find teacher-student love story is unsettle and discomfort. but maybe because this is 90s manga, it give different feeling and atmosphere. It has same vibe with Hirunaka no Ryuusei, but funnier. and you'll just fall in love with the teacher cause he just like this man you find in real life that has attractive personality (most hero in manga while very attractive but seems to be impossible to be a real person in real life ^_^). I am pretty sure you will love this series.

    - Candy candy.
this is probably the most anti-main stream shoujo have ever been made. the love story is dramatic but very realistic. It was very hard for me (and probably the rest of teenagers out there at that time) to read this manga. because we were young and we expected some simple sweet romance story. yet, they gave us very heavy one with Candy candy. now growing up, I can finally understand and found the beauty of the story. but still, it was suck when you were 10 and read it as your very first manga.

sorry for long comment. just happy to share some good reading

    1. Nah, this long comment at least helped a fellow shoujo lover! I'm glad I read your comment. From your list,I've only read Hana Yori Dango and watched its kdrama/anime adaptations and loved them. You must have read Hana Kimi, right? A non-typical shoujo manga I highly recommend would be Akikan baby, Taiyou no le, Dengeki Daisy, Papillion Hana to Chou and Eden no Hana. They're good reads that every fanatic of the demographic should put their fingers on. Happy reading :)
